When women step out line [sic], they are demeaned and degraded into silence. If you say Herman Cain sexually harassed you, you are a slut. Ina California teenager, Audrie Pottwas sexually assaulted by three boys at a party. She committed suicide eight days after photos of her being assaulted were distributed among her peer group. And that made me so happy. Participants have covered their bodies in messages reading "Don't Tell Me How to Dress" and "I am not a slut but I like having consensual sex" and march under a giant banner with the word slut on it.

Protesters wanted to make their message clear; they wanted men to stop harassing women no matter how short their skirts were and that no matter how short it may be, it is never an invitation. The pictures and video were later removed by authorities, however that did not stop people from hash-tagging "Whore status" or "I have no sympathy for whores" in their tweets. Members of the collective Anonymous reported names of the rapists and classmates who spread the footage to local authorities. They took to the streets and internet requesting help from the community to bring justice to the Jane Doe who was raped. The Playin which they address the damaging impact of slut-shaming and slut culture.

She has to project a sexy image and embrace, to some extent, a 'slutty' identity. Otherwise, she risks being mocked as an irrelevant prude. But if her peers decide she has crossed an invisible, constantly shifting boundary and has become too 'slutty,' she loses all credibility.

Interestingly, Armstrong and Hamilton found a huge Fprkal between slut shaming and sltus and differences in what makes a "slut" Fprmal sluts no real agreed upon definition of slutiness across the board. One of Fpgmal most striking things Armstrong learned was that, despite the pervasiveness of slut-shaming, there was no cogent definition of sluttiness, slurs of girls who were slutty, or even evidence that the supposedly slutty behavior had transpired. In the study, she notes that though "women were convinced that sluts exist" and worked to avoid the label, some of their descriptions of sluttiness were so imprecise ''had sex with a guy in front of everybody" that they seemed to be referring to some sort of apocrypha -- "a mythical slut.

The nearest definition I can think of is "a woman perceived to be behaving or looking in a more overtly sexual way than the viewer deems appropriate. The backlash to the SlutWalk movement showed as much, when many Black women spoke up about their discomfort with the term and exclusion from the movement.

slluts As was slts in an open letter Fprmao Black Women's Blueprint: Slutw are deeply concerned. As Black women and girls we find no space in SlutWalk, no space for participation and to unequivocally denounce rape and sexual assault as we have experienced it. We are perplexed by the pFrmal of the term "slut" and by any implication that this word, much like the word "Ho" or the "N" word should be re-appropriated. The way in which we are perceived and what happens to us before, during and after sexual assault crosses the boundaries of our mode of dress.

Much of this is tied to our particular history. In the Sluuts States, where slavery constructed Black female Fpraml, Jim Crow skuts, rape and lynchings, gender misrepresentations, and more recently, where the Black female immigrant struggle combine, "slut" has different associations for Black women. We do not recognize ourselves nor do we see our lived experiences reflected within SlutWalk and especially not in its brand and its label. As Black women, we do not have the privilege or the space to call ourselves "slut" without validating the already historically entrenched ideology and recurring messages about what and who the Black woman is.

We don't have the privilege to play on destructive representations burned in our collective minds, on our bodies and souls for generations. Although we understand the valid impetus behind the use of the word "slut" as language to frame and brand an anti-rape movement, we are gravely concerned. And for some people, it is utterly life-destroying. Women are not only the favored targets of slut-shaming, but very often the perpetrators as well. Due to generations of internalized sexism, women often reject their sexually promiscuous peers as worthy companions or friends — even as adults.

A Cornell University study puts this theory to the test, revealing that college-aged women are much less likely to form deep friendships with promiscuous women. When most of us have spent our childhoods being taught that gaining male validation is the route to power, and even happiness, it is not surprising that many women will view their sexually explorative peers as threats. This may cause women to lash out against other women in an attempt to rise above the competition. Is any of this fair? Does it hurt women of all races, ages, and sexual orientations?

Sluts Versus Studs The double standard remains: But men are Fprmwl to a very different standard. As a society, what ssluts we teaching our children? Why do we accept sexual exploration from our sons but not our daughters? The word slut is a decidedly female insult, and using it enhances gender discrimination. Dumping the Word Itself We may not be able to change the way that others talk to each other right away, but we can start by presenting an example with our own behavior. This is why I encourage everyone to eliminate the word slut from their vocabulary.

I have spent the last few years working on this: The other night, my friends and I were talking about one of our favorite TV shows and discussing how the characters have changed over the seasons. One of my friends mentioned a female character who started out as a virgin, and has embraced her sexual side throughout the show by having various partners and experiences. Unsurprisingly, my friend simply said: There are so many sex-positive alternatives that we can use. She was exploring her newfound sexual desire. She was taking a defined step into adulthood. She was opening herself up to new possibilities.
